DHS Secretary inspects results of blast testing

San Diego, CA: former DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen examines the blast test results of the border wall prototypes.
My office routinely sends out a photographer to shadow VIP tours. At the end of the day, we present our best shots to the guest as a courtesy. Usually all that's expected would be typical shots, like handshakes and other staged photo ops. However, I like to push myself to capture something a little more elevated whenever I go out on location. I love shooting candids, capturing a moment as if the camera was never there. I've always been inspired by Time's Photos of the Year and so I make an effort during each shoot to capture at least one moment that would beautifully tell a story.

For me, this photo showcases Former Secretary Nielsen and the tremendous pressure she manages every day, all the while appearing calm and collected. I love that in this photo you get to be a fly on the wall while she's being briefed. Her importance as the head of the Department of Homeland Security is evident by the armed motorcade and Secret Service behind her.

I'm new to using Adobe Lightroom CC, but so far very happy with the results it produces. Compared to the original photo, I bumped up the highlights on Ms. Nielsen, added a subtle vignette, and used the gradient tool to bring some color back into the sky. I'm not sure if my adjustments are too heavy handed but my hope is that your eye will naturally gravitate to the important details of the photo without having any of my image adjustments drawing attention to themselves.
